Acaba de ponerse en marcha un descomunal proyecto de investigación en demografía sobre el que tendréis más noticias en este blog. Se llama Methodologies and Data mining techniques for the analysis of Big Data based on Longitudinal Population and Epidemiological Registers, su diseño, presentación y liderato son de Diego Ramiro (CSIC), está financiado por la UE y sus recursos incluyen 15 contratos de investigación repartidos por toda Europa entre las muy diversas instituciones participantes. Applications are invited for 15 Early Stage Researchers positions to be funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network “LONGPOP (Methodologies and Data mining techniques for the analysis of Big Data based on Longitudinal Population and Epidemiological Registers)” within the Horizon 2020 Programme of the European Commission. LONGPOP is a consortium of high profile universities, research institutions and companies located in Spain, Netherlands, Sweden, Italy, United Kingdom, Belgium and Switzerland.

Public Abstract LONGPOP:

European societies face rapid social changes, challenges and benefits, which can be studied with traditional tools of analysis, but with serious limitations. This rapid transformation covers changes in family forms, fertility, the decline of mortality and increase of longevity, and periods of economic and social instability. Owing to population ageing across Europe, countries are now experiencing the impact of these rapid changes on the sustainability of their welfare systems. At the same time, the use of the space and residential mobility has become a key topic, with migration within the EU countries and from outside Europe being at the center of the political agenda. Over the past decade research teams across Europe have been involved in the development and construction of longitudinal population registers and large research databases, while opening up avenues for new linkages between different data sources (ie administrative and health data) making possible to gain an understanding of these fast societal transformations. However, in order to work with these types of datasets requires advanced skills in both data management and statistical techniques. LONGPOP aims to create network to utilize these different research teams to share experiences, construct joint research, create a training track for specialist in the field and increase the number of users of these large– possibly underused – databases, making more scientists and stakeholders aware of the richness in the databases.

Career Stage

  1. the ESR must at the time of recruitment be in the first four years (FTE) of his/her research career, and not yet have a PhD
  2. the ESR must in the 3 years preceding his recruitment not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (study, work, …) in the country of the recruiting institution.

Benefits and salary

The MSCA programme offers highly competitive and attractive salary and working conditions. The successful candidates will receive a salary in accordance with the MSCA regulations for early stage researchers. Exact salary will be confirmed upon appointment. In addition to their individual scientific projects, all fellows will benefit from contributing to a large Horizon 2020 project, further continuing education, which includes internships and secondments, a variety of training modules and active participation in workshops and conferences.

All applications proceed through the on-line recruitment portal on the longpop-itn.eu website. Candidates must apply electronically for between one and three positions and indicate their preference. To apply, candidates must submit electronically their CV (including academic credentials) and an application letter (maximum 2 pages). The application letter should detail: their interest on the research project(s) offered by LONGPOP; how their skills align with the position description(s); future career aspirations and public awareness; and two letters of reference. During registration, applicants will need to demonstrate their eligibility (according to three criteria; see below). A certified copy of their Master certificate and list of grades (with certified translation for languages other than English, Portuguese, Spanish or French) must be provided. The deadline for the on-line registration is 15th of April 2016. Once the deadline has passed, all eligible applications will be sent to the main supervisors of each project, who will assess the applications according to its overall scientific potential, mobility experience and public awareness. Short-listed candidates will be invited for interview. Place, format and dates of the interviews will be announced with the short list of candidates; others will be informed that their application has not been successful. Scores and supervisors’ comments will be collected by the project’s Supervisory Board. Once a consensus is reached, the ranking and comments will be recorded. After the selection, and by the 15th of June 2016, all shortlisted applicants will be informed about the strengths and weaknesses of their application. If no satisfactory candidates are found for a given project then the position will be readvertised following the same rules and procedures.

Finally, at the time of recruitment, the appointed researchers will be given a brochure with their rights and duties of their work contracts and social benefits as employees of an EC-funded network. The importance of training and career planning will also be emphasized.

Applicants need to fully respect three eligibility criteria:


Early-stage researchers (ESR) are those who are, at the time of recruitment by the host, in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers and not yet have a PhD. This is measured from the date when they obtained the degree which formally entitles them to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the research training is provided, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate was envisaged.


Conditions of international mobility of researchers: Researchers are required to undertake trans-national mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) in order to participate in training and conduct research when taking up the appointment. At the time of selection by the host organization, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organization for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment. Short stays, such as holidays, are not taken into account.


English language: Network fellows (ESRs) must demonstrate that their ability to understand and express themselves in written and spoken English is sufficiently high for them to derive the full benefit from the network training and pursuing for the doctorate degree.
